Liberty Housing Development Corporation

Home is more than just a structure and a location. Home is an ideal; it’s a feeling and a sense of connection for which we all long. But, For many people with disabilities in Philadelphia, “home” remains out of reach due to a lack of suitable housing opportunities.

Liberty Housing Development Corporation (LHDCorp) hopes to change that.

A not-for-profit Community Housing Development Organization developing affordable, accessible, integrated housing for people with disabilities and their families, LHDCorp firmly believes that all people with disabilities should have the right to make their own choices and to live independently. In the housing units, they work with property managers, landlords, and developers to create opportunities for people to do just that. You can learn more about their properties in the Properties section of their website.

The Story

Liberty Resources, Inc. created Liberty Housing Development Corporation as a separate 501(c)(3) not-for-profit for the sole purpose of developing accessible, affordable, integrated housing for persons with disabilities currently living in nursing homes. Established in April of 2007, LHDCorp has received funding to develop 29 one-bedroom integrated apartments located in buildings that total 401 units.

In April of 2018, LHDCorp was awarded a grant to construct more affordable, accessible, and integrated housing apartment units, which will be located in West Philadelphia, on 52nd and Poplar Streets. This building will be available for people with physical disabilities and people who have autism. It has been named after Stephen F. Gold, who is a civil rights attorney, as well as a long-time advocate and friend of LRI and LHDCorp. Read more about the project here.

As an independent 501(c)(3) not-for-profit, LHDCorp has its own Board of Directors. You can learn more about their Board in the Our Team section of their website.
