Reconciliation Bill Threatens Medicaid and SNAP Access
In the early hours of Thursday morning, the House of Representatives passed a sweeping reconciliation bill—by just one vote. This came after the House Rules Committee worked late into the night on final changes, following negotiations with the President on the bill’s provisions.
The final version includes an estimated $715 billion in Medicaid cuts. According to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), over 8 million people could lose Medicaid coverage as a result. When factoring in additional changes to the Affordable Care Act, the total number of people expected to lose access to healthcare reaches 13.7 million nationwide.
The bill also moves up the timeline for new Medicaid work reporting requirements—from 2029 to December 2026—introducing job loss penalties that will disproportionately impact people with disabilities, older adults, and low-income families.
In addition, the bill includes $300 billion in cuts to SNAP (food assistance) benefits, putting food access at risk for millions more.
This bill has passed the House. Now it’s in the Senate—and we must act.
👉 Contact your Senators today and urge them to reject these harmful cuts and protect the services people with disabilities rely on.
