Newsworks: Clear winners, lingering eyesores singled out among Philly’s vacant lots

20 years ago, Pearl Brown took on the challenge of rescuing a dilapidated vacant lot at 2417 Masher Street in Philadelphia. Today, the former eyesore boasts a beautiful “garden oasis”, which stands as a testament to Pearl’s persistence and the power of grassroots community action. This month, The Campaign to Take Back Vacant Land—which includes Disabled in Action among other organizations—concluded a contest to identify the best and worst of the city’s vacant lots, and Pearl came away with first prize.
