Every Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday: Nicole’s Place is open for Consumer shopping from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM.

Every Wednesday: Legal Advocacy – Temple University’s Law School provides free advice and representation for Consumers on general legal problems. To schedule an appointment, call 215-204-1800.

ReTreads: Formerly a “loaner” program, ReTreads now will give away clean, inspected, recycled wheelchairs and other devices to Consumers. Open 10:00 AM-3:00 PM Tuesday and Thursday, by appointment only. Call Ext. 272.

Visitability Committee meets monthly, Bacal Room, First Floor, 3:00-5:00 PM. To learn more about this effort to make all new constructed homes “visitable” for disabled people, call Nancy, Ext. 116.

"Policy Posse" meets twice a month, 1:00-3:00 PM. Learn about the issues facing the disability community; become an advocate for your civil rights! For meeting dates, call Cassie, Ext. 309.

A Deaf/Hard of Hearing Workshop

Get a better understanding of English and quickly increase your knowledge of English grammar.

Businesses acknowledge the perseverance and determination of deaf/hard of hearing adults who have successfully undertaken literacy or basic education. Their inspiring stories may serve as models for adults who wish to return to their studies to improve their American Sign Language, reading, and writing skills.

Changing the Culture Disability Awareness Lecture Series at West Chester University

Dr. I. King Jordan grew up in Glen Ridge, PA. He lost his hearing due to injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident when he was 21 years old. Later he attended Gallaudet University in Washington, DC, where he earned a Ph.D. in Psychology in 1973. He became one of Gallaudet’s best professors over the years. However, it was a week in 1988 that catapulted Dr. Jordan to the top of the Deaf World when, after a week of protests (better known as Deaf President Now!) he was appointed the first Deaf president of Gallaudet University. His quote is a motto within the Deaf community: Deaf people can do anything hearing people can, except hear.

Sign language interpreters will be provided.

Deaf Outreach: Medical Interpreting Workshop

Medical Interpreting: What’s Going On?

Everyone agrees good communication between medical professionals (doctors, dentists, therapists) and patients is essential. Recognizing this, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) includes specific language regarding communication access in these settings for Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing people.

Even so, there have been numerous cases of failure on the part of medical professionals to provide sign language interpreters for their patients, and some instances of interpreters being provided, but Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing patients canceling or missing their appointments. What should be done? Come find out!

Need An Extra Paw? That’s right, a paw!

When an extra hand isn’t around to help you, you can trained your own dog to assist and help you maintain an independent lifestyle.

Mainline Deputy Dogs is a nonprofit organization that works with people with physical and psychiatric disabilities to help them train their own dog to be a fully-certified service dog.

“Deputy Dogs” can do the following tasks, among many others:

  • retrieve objects
  • provide balance and stability
  • assist you up from a chair or bed
  • get the mail
  • carry laundry
  • push or pull a wheelchair
  • open and close doors
  • summon assistance
  • wake you up or help you sleep
  • lead you away from stressful situations
