Debbie Russell, Board Chair
has volunteered and worked in the field of Human Services, including services to low income families in crisis, including children with disabilities. She chose to pursue advocating with and for the civil rights of people with disabilities when she joined the staff of LRI in 1990. She was proudly the first full-time Supports Coordinator in Philadelphia and helped consumers become as active in the community as they chose–from socialization to transitioning to living in their own homes. Deborah also represented LRI as a member of the Grassroots Advocacy Project and the Statewide Advocacy team to impact policies that affect the lives of the disability community in Pennsylvania. In addition, she became Manager of Independent Living Services where she thrived, sharing peer counseling and organizing skills with staff and consumers so that many became involved and engaged in upholding their rights. Deborah is a long-time active member of Disabled In Action and National Adapt, two grassroots groups that use advocacy and activism to uphold the civil rights of disabled people.
